Clean and well-functioning windows in your home allow for plenty of natural light and air circulation. However, if they are not maintained properly they can make your home feel dark and drab and end up needing costly repairs.

Consistent maintenance keeps their appearance and ensures they operate effectively, helping you save on energy costs and prolonging their lifespan.

Here are some easy DIY maintenance ideas you can do on a regular basis:

  1. Clean your windows annually; inside and outside.

Dirty windows can obscure your view, decrease the sunlight entering your home, and lead to the deterioration of window materials over time. When cleaning your windows don't forget the weep holes in the window frame. Make sure there is no debris blocking them and that water is not pooling up in the frame after a rainstorm. After clearing any debris, pour a mixture of hot water and vinegar into the weep hole to clean then.

  2. Lubricate tracks and hinges.

Windows that are hard to open and close can be annoying and might suggest that the tracks or hinges require lubrication. Regularly lubricating your windows and hinges ensures they operate smoothly and helps prevent damage. First, vacuum all dust and debris. Using a wax like furniture polish works great as a lubricant. Spray the entire track, let sit for a minute, then operate the window several times.

  3. Check your window screens.

Window screens are useful for keeping insects and debris outside. They also offer a barrier to the window from outside elements. However, they can tear or become loose over time, which reduces their efficiency. By regularly checking and fixing or replacing screens, you can easily maintain your windows.

  4. Wood windows require painting or refinishing.

If not properly cared for, wooden window frames can degrade over time. Consistently repainting or refinishing them aids in shielding the wood from moisture, UV damage, and decay. Make sure to use a clear sealant over the paint or stain for added protection.

  5. Inspect the windows on a regular basis.

To ensure proper insulation and security, any cracked or broken glass must be promptly repaired or replaced.

Regularly open and close all windows to confirm they are working properly. Operational difficulties may suggest issues with the frame, balance system, or other parts.

Keeping your windows in good condition doesn't need to be stressful or complex, but it does demand consistent care and effort.
